Edwin Chadwick's Contributions to Public Health Reform:
Chadwick became quite the reformation figure in London, especially during and after the cholera epidemic. His involment with the Poor Laws, Public Health Act and creation of the Board of Health, are all recognized in Chadwick's work in the Public Health Reformation. Chadwick forever was a follower of the Miasma theory and he stuck to it. He focused on the theory that "bad air" caused the spread of disease. He began to look at disease at a deeper level as well. He researched the poor living conditions of people in the "slums" of London and came to the conclusion that poor sanitation was causing the spread of diseases. Being reported as a proactive man, Chadwick got right to work on his sanitation improvements in London.
What was Chadwick's sanitation revelation?
- decided Londoners needed a proper form of waste disposal
- his idea was to create a pipe and sewage disposal system
- also drinking water must be piped to citizen's homes to prevent contamination
